TIME FOR A REPUBLIC: Let’s Bring Down the Monarchy
April 28, 2011 § 1 Comment
Inspired by our contempt for the Royal Wedding circus that’s transformed half the population of the UK into cap-doffing morons, Olly and I have come up with a simple way that Republicans (or just people who think having a monarchy is rather silly in this day and age, not to mention a waste of money) can voice their opposition to the current antiquated system.
This photo sums it up:
Here’s what you do.
1. Get hold of some English paper money
This should be pretty easy even for broke students. Either use what’s ready to hand already or, if you’re really committed to the cause, draw out a load of cash from your bank.
2. Grab a pen/pencil
Biro is best, but whatever you’ve got to hand is fine.
3. Deface note(s) as demonstrated above
For consistency’s sake: in the bottom right-hand corner on the side with the Queen’s face, draw a speech bubble as shown and write “TIME FOR A REPUBLIC” in it.
4. Put the note(s) back into the system
Either spend it as normal, or deposit it back into your bank (it’ll end up there sooner or later).
WHY DO THIS?
To demonstrate to the authorities that we, the people, are sick of the continued existence of the monarchy as an institution.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE NOTES?
Banks are obliged to remove defaced notes from circulation and send them to the Bank of England. The removal of large numbers of “TIME FOR A REPUBLIC” notes from circulation will draw attention to our cause.
Also, ordinary members of the public who see the notes before they are removed will be drawn into the issue whether they agree with us or not. Which is nice. Annoying Royalists sounds like fun.
IS THIS ILLEGAL?
No, not in practice. As you can see from the above photo, cashiers etc. often write on notes when counting them. It won’t prevent you from being able to spend the money and it certainly won’t bring the law down on you.
Now go forth and deface.
LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC!
